Quarter Moon Farm has moved to the rocky coast of Maine! With two children and five grandchildren all living there, Cindy and Marcel decided it was time to join them. Their black garlic business moved with them, and they continue to produce the same delicious black garlic products a half mile from the ocean and midway between their two children’s homes.
The climate is milder in Maine because they live so close to the ocean, but the weather and soil are not conducive to growing quality garlic there. Fortunately Cindy and Marcel have access to excellent organic garlic, which they purchase from a local food coop. Their last harvest in New Hampshire before the move was a big one; “Our best ever! Between 11,000 to 12,000 heads of garlic. It did us in,” joked Cindy. “We’re getting too old for this!”
The couple has a separate building on their land in Maine, which houses their black garlic fermentation and production. At some point, their daughter will take over the business, and Cindy has plans to write a cookbook, so stay tuned for those developments in years to come!
Although Cindy misses her farmers markets back in New Hampshire, she and Marcel are greatly enjoying spending more time with their family, watching their grandchildren’s sporting events, and becoming part of their new community. And the dogs? Sugar passed away a year ago at the ripe old age of 15-1/2 . Pi (age 11) has adjusted well to life in Maine and sticks to Cindy like glue. After all, home is where the heart is, so the whole family is adjusting just fine.
